I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to interview Ms. Symone Baskerville, a 20-year-old Kent State University student from Chicago.
Symone is launching Kent’s first fabric store, Kent Fabrics. You can visit her pop-up shops, which are announced on Instagram. Her next pop-up shop is tonight (Monday the 30th) from 5-8pm at Novastar Hair Collection at 126 West College Street.
Symone came up with the idea to start a local fabric store due to the lack of access to quality fabrics in Kent. Being one of the top fashion schools in the country, Symone thought a designated shop where students could purchase supplies like bobbins, zippers, and high-end fabrics would be lucrative. She won prize money at a pitch competition through LaunchNET KSU, which has allowed her to start the business.
Growing up in Chicago, Symone began sewing at the age of five, and has continued her passion for creating clothing by majoring in fashion design.
She plans to implement social media as an outreach opportunity to bring in customers. The Kent Fabrics social media sites are run by Kent sophomore design major Grace McLain. Symone hopes that Kent Fabrics can reach one thousand followers on social media by the grand opening.
Kent Fabrics will have a strong connection to the Fashion School. Symone has been in contact with the head of the Fashion School, J.R. Campbell, discussing how fashion student organizations and classes can build partnerships with the store. Symone hopes that professors can offer incentives to students for visiting the shop, and possibly even hold classes there.
A year from now, Symone hopes the store has its own space, a larger inventory, and official employees. In the meantime, she plans to run the store herself and hire interns to help her share the experience working in the fashion industry firsthand.
Symone has a passion for creating, working with her hands, and helping others. She hopes her shop will have a “local store feel with a big city experience,” and is using her Chicago roots to bring an exciting new energy to Kent.
I sincerely wish Symone the best in her business endeavors. She is such an inspiration, and I know her new ideas will bring something very special to Kent State.
