How to Manage Your Time in College

So you’re going to your classes, maybe working part time, you might even be living on your own, and on top of that you want to sleep, exercise, and have a social life.

If that sounds like a lot, that’s because it is!

So how can you have it all?

I really think it comes down to planning. 

The great thing about college is that you can (mostly) choose your schedule. (In order to do this, make sure you book an appointment with your advisor EARLY!) If you don’t like waking up early, then you don’t need to schedule 8AM classes. Likewise, if you want to be done for the day by 3PM, it’s possible to work around that, too. All of my friends are on a different schedule and most of them are happy with it. Some people like to wake up and go, and others love night classes. There’s something for everyone.

By this point in your life, you probably know yourself well enough to figure out what works best for you. I really recommend settling into a routine. While routine can be boring and you definitely need to shake it up sometimes, having structure will help you accomplish all your tasks. 

Another tips is that you don’t need to do everything in one day. What I mean by this is: if you have a mile-long list- clean your house, cook a meal, finish homework, work out, go to class, have coffee with a friend- you’re just going to be stressed and probably won’t do each task well. Plan out your entire week or several days ahead if you can. If you tell yourself, “Monday I only have one class so I’ll catch up on homework, Tuesday night I’ll meal prep, and Wednesday I’ll go to the gym”- you won’t feel so overwhelmed.

I’ll include an example of my routine so you guys can get a feel for it…

(A rough outline of) A Day in My Life at College

7:30-8:00- Wake up

8:00-9:00- Get ready

9:00-11:00- I will either catch up on homework at the library, clean my place, work out, or run errands.

11:00-12:30- Class

12:30-1:30- Stop home for lunch

2:00-4- Class

4:30-6:30- Come home, cook dinner, chill

7:00-until I go to bed- I will either catch up on assignments, call family/friends, do something for fun, shower, or plan for the next day.

As you can see, I don’t work out every day. I don’t clean every day, I don’t go to the library every day, and I don’t cook every day. Spacing things out will keep you from stressing out!

And like I always say, it’s important to realize when you’re doing a little too much. You’re allowed to say no to things. If working a part-time job is too hard for you during the school year, maybe you can work and save money during breaks and holidays or find a weekend gig. If you need to drop a class, do it right away or else you’ll probably regret it later. If a relationship is draining you, know when to let it go. And if you don’t feel like going out one night…just stay in! You’re not a superhuman. Sorry, but you’re not. You’re a regular human just like the rest of us, and you can do anything but not everything. 😉
