I Graduated from Yoga Teacher Training: Here is What I Learned

I did it!!


I went through nine months, two hundred hours, and two practicums to make it here. If I’m honest, at the beginning of this teacher training I really wanted this moment- having the certificate in my hands. I quickly learned, though, that this experience is about the journey, not the end goal. The certificate is a piece of paper; it’s what I learned along the way that matters. So I did my best to enjoy every minute, even when times were hard. My life happened to be an absolute rollercoaster throughout the course of this training. I strongly believe that without this training, I would have struggled more during this time. I learned techniques to help connect with my calm, my spirit, which helped me immensely throughout periods of both excitement and grief.

I met wonderful people, and I learned so much from each of them. They taught me how to be a better person, and for that I could not be more thankful. They taught me how to be patient; how to be kind; and how to improve myself, without being a perfectionist about it.


I learned that being a yoga teacher isn’t about nailing a perfect headstand. It’s not about how loud you can “ohm” or how many pairs of Lulus you own. Being a yoga teacher is about sharing your love; giving others compassion who badly need it; and letting your light shine to help make someone’s day a bit brighter. 

So what will I do next? My hope is to bring yoga to my college, because I want to help students ease their stress. I would love to go on and complete more training that will help me work specifically with people who are facing mental health struggles. I want to design classes curated for those who struggle with eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and OCD.


This picture was taken in fall 2015, at the peak of my eating disorder. I taught a class to my sister’s Girl Scout troop and was so inspired by how much they enjoyed it. Teaching also gave me a break from my illness. Ever since, I knew I wanted my 200 hours! 

Yoga has been there for me, even when I wasn’t even there for me. Yoga gave me a place to feel safe. After years of feeling like I could never fit in, I found my place in this yoga teacher training. This changed my life.


If you are thinking about yoga teacher training, I strongly recommend looking into it. I was so thrilled when I finally took the leap. Even if you don’t think you’re ready- you probably are. There’s always so much to learn.

And in case you do decide to jump on the yoga wagon…the Cleveland Clinic has an outstanding program. I could not imagine having learned anywhere else.
